Sedimentary rocks contain information about what was occurring on earth’s surface at the place and time the sediments were deposited. In some cases sedimentary rocks contain fossils, which provide information about what was living at a certain place and time on earth. There are two main groups of sedimentary rocks: chemical and clastic.

Crystallization, erosion and sedimentation, and metamorphism transform one rock type into another or change sediments into rock. The rock cycle describes the transformations of one type of rock to another.
